When asked by the Make-A-Wish Foundation® if you could wish for anything what would it be, 14 year old, Natalie, elected to create, design and market her own product. Make-A-Wish® partnered with Wish-Bone salad dressing, and the result is "Natalie's Nalu," a raspberry and guava vinaigrette.
A native of Mililani, Natalie was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2000 and is currently in remission. She has always loved experimenting in the kitchen, so she wanted a wish that would give her a real hands-on experience and allow her to showcase her creative and artistic talents.
"I wanted my wish to be totally unique and give me an opportunity I wouldn't normally have," Natalie said. "My goal was to design a product that really represents my personality and where I'm from."
She started in Wish-Bone's research and development labs, where she worked with a chef to create the flavor of her dressing. She settled on vinaigrette that was inspired by her favorite smoothie and is a blend of raspberry and guava. Paying homage to surfing, her beloved pastime, Natalie named her dressing "Nalu," which means, "wave" in Hawaiian.
Next, it was on to the creative services department, where she put her stamp and her face on the label. Unlike a typical salad dressing label, Natalie's Nalu features a cartoon-like image of her surfing on the waves near Diamond Head.. When Natalie started high school this fall, she was able to show her classmates the result of her venture into corporate America.
"This has been an amazing experience I'll never forget," Natalie said. "I'd like to thank everyone at the Make-A-Wish Foundation® and Wish-Bone for making my wish come true."
